Steve A. Hicks, EdD
Director, Workforce Development
Steve Hicks is the Director of Workforce Development for the North Carolina Institute for Public Health, the outreach and service arm of the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. In his role, Steve leads the Office of Continuing Education (OCE), which provides training and development services that transfer research and best practices to providers of public health in North Carolina. Steve oversees the design, development, delivery and evaluation of all continuing education services and programs that focus on helping public health workers improve their performance. The OCE staff produces over 125 continuing education and professional development programs for North Carolina’s Public Health workforce each year.
Steve’s first experience in public heath was with UNC’s Medical School as training director for a global maternal and child health project known as Prime II, a USAID sponsored global project. He has held administrative posts at both UNC and Duke University’s business schools where he developed expertise in leadership and management development program planning and design. At UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School he designed and developed leadership and management development programs for organizations in a variety of sectors including the Department of Defense, ExxonMobil, Kaiser-Permanente, Wachovia Corporation, Quintiles Transnational, W.C. Bradley, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Postal Service. As the Assistant Dean for Executive Education at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business he designed customized programs for Bethlehem Steel, Blue Cross/Blue Shield Association, Eli Lilly and Company, Ferguson Enterprises, Harnischfeger Industries, ITT Corporation, Johnson and Johnson, Morgan Stanley, NEC Technologies, and Norfolk Southern. At Kenan-Flagler, he taught organizational behavior classes and led outdoor experiential team building exercises.
Prior to joining these Universities, he held management positions at Learning Resources, Inc. and Westvaco Corporation and served as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard. He has degrees from Duke University, University of North Carolina, and NC State University.
